BIO

I am a medical sociologist and ethnographer. I study how popular cultural beliefs shape American medicine.

My first book, Conceiving Masculinity, garnered critical praise and international media coverage, and won the 2015 Sociology of Health and Illness Book of the Year Prize. I am currently writing my second book, The Children’s Hospital: Healing America with Pediatric Love.

I hold a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California-San Diego and completed postdoctoral training at Cambridge University and the University of Oregon. I live in the Pacific Northwest with my husband and four children.
